What Parents Can do For a Child Who Has Witnessed Domestic Violence

Model Appropriate Conflict Management- no threatening, intimidation, physical punishment, verbal assaults

Engage in Healthy, Non-Violent Relationships

Be Open and Honest About Abuse- it may be hard to talk about, but children need to process the violent events

Be Involved with Your Child - help with homework, know who their friends are, where they are going and what they are doing

Tell Them the Violence Was Not Their Fault- that there was nothing they did wrong to cause the abuse

Go to a Support Group for Survivors of Domestic Violence.  As a parent, you can get support and your children have the opportunity to learn and play for the evening.

Give Your Child Unconditional Love - tell your child that he or she is a good person, that you are proud of them, compliment them on what they do well, hug them, kiss them, tell them you love them, SHOW them you love them.
